Purpose

This study applies
institutional and stakeholder theories to examine if the supply chain
position affects the importance of each dimension of triple-bottom-line in
medium- and long-term decision-making. Market and regulatory drivers behind
such behaviour is investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

The research data
comprises 508 manufacturing and trading firms operating in Finland, which
were divided into four supply chain tiers. The main research methods are
descriptive analysis, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test.

Findings

The economic
dimension dominates decision-making in all tiers, followed by social and
environmental considerations. Firms are mainly influenced by market drivers.
The proximity of the end customer increases the role of market drivers in
environmental sustainability, and decreases the role of regulatory drivers.

Research
limitations/implications

The research
setting is cross-sectional, and the sample is geographically limited. The
analysis could be extended to other countries with a more detailed breakdown
of drivers.

Practical
implications

Results help firms
in evaluating their position regarding sustainability, and redesigning
efforts in the intersection of regulatory and market governance. Results may
also help firms in promoting sustainability practices between supply chain
members and policy-makers in their practical efforts towards sustainable
development.

Social
implications

Regulation is most
applicable at the upstream of the supply chain, particularly in environmental
issues. At the downstream, market drivers prevail. To boost the sustainable
development and behavioural change of societies, it is necessary to find a
balance between regulatory and market governance.

Original/value

This paper
contributes to the sustainable supply chain management literature by using a
large-scale survey to analyse whether the dimensions of sustainability and
the underlying drivers differ in various tiers of the supply chain.
