Disruptive innovations have caused many industry leaders to falter while elevating prior non-existent companies to position of esteem in those industries. The capacity of disruptive innovations to result in such significant reshuffling of organizations makes this a phenomenon of interest. This is particularly so in an era where IT has become pervasive and woven into the fabric of today’s organizations. The aim of this study is therefore to understand how IT (specifically IT/IS capabilities) plays a role either in the creation of disruptive innovations opportunities or in responding to disruptive innovation threats. This paper presents a proposed research plan aimed at eliciting theoretical and practical implications from this occurrence. The motivation, planned research design, and expected contributions are highlighted in the paper.
