This chapter charts the invention and dissemination of lichen alcohol making transnationally in the famine year of 1868 and after. The new brand of strong alcohol, lafbrännvin or lavbrännvin in Swedish and jäkäläviina in Finnish, become a popular topic in newspapers in Sweden and Finland for a while with many often repeated news articles from both countries crossing the Baltic Sea.
