Gig Science
and the Platform University – the Future of Knowledge X.0
Abstract
This paper explores the growth
of short-termism in research landscape and its several features which we have
named as ‘the gig science’. In this paper we present and define the features and manifestations
of ‘gig science’, its effects and its multidimensional presence in contemporary
academia. The phenomenon of ‘the gig science’ is developed and further put in
relationship with the recent changes taking place at the universities as
institutions that employ, host, fund and carry the continuity of scientific
activities at large. We argue that universities as knowledge platforms should be understood and analyzed in relation to
contemporary digitized global economy and as one manifestation of the platform
economy. Several features in the current higher education institutions are
resembling the platforms.
