The practice in the age of global knowledge economy has created a
hostile competition between urban locations to secure a sustained
economic and societal development. The fast running vehicle of being
successful in this competition is widely agreed as generation of
creativity, knowledge and innovation and then translating them into high
value added commercial products or services. In this context, besides
economy and society of knowledge, spatial and governance domains are
deemed fundamental. Knowledge-based urban development has come to the
scene to deliver a knowledge city that brings all these strengths under
the same roof. This chapter elaborates and provides insights on the
theory and practice of knowledge cities and knowledge-based urban
development.
