Tiivistelmä
This article examines the proposed standard orthography for the Scandinavian variety of övdalian (also known as Elfdalian) from the point of view of ideologically-based spelling. The orthography work is part of a wider ambition that övdalian be recognised as a separate Scandinavian language instead of a highly divergent dialect of Swedish, which has been the traditional view on this variety. The argument put forward in the article is that many of the orthographic choices made by Råðdjärum, the övdalian Language Council, have been influenced by the overall ambition to dissociate övdalian from the Swedish standard. Some spellings are analysed in relation to the phonemic systems of övdalian and Standard Swedish, and it it shown that the ambition to dissociate övdalian from Swedish, may indeed oftentimes have been given priority to other basic principles that Råðdjärum has entertained in its orthography work.
