Worldwide aviation is growing rapidly. It would be catastrophic if the amount of accidents would grow with the same speed even though flying is one of the safest ways to travel. Different interest groups in aviation industry have been collecting data about incidents, accidents and other deviations in air traffic saving them into databases. Reports from these have been analysed thoroughly and used as basis of regulation planning to avoid similar deviations happen in the future. The collection of data and reporting systems have reached their top level. The focal point in this context is analysis. “Normal” tools like Excel have been used generally, but these cannot process narratives that could contain nuggets of valuable knowledge. Text mining could provide a solution, and it has been used successfully already for several years in aviation but its use is still on a very moderate level and needs research to be augmented.
