The United Nations’ ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ sets a goal for ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture. The goal has various subgoals. In this paper we discuss the strengths and limitations the goal and its subgoals have in guiding people’s food choices. We state that the multitude of the goals makes practical choices complex. Yet, multitude of goals is needed in order for the agenda to have a motivating power. However, some factors relevant for food choice seem to be missing from the subgoals listed. Finally, we challenge the traditional forms of dietary guidance and suggest that guidance can only serve the goals if its focus is shifted from food groups and particular foodstuffs to the whole food chain of a specific food item.
