The article deals with the grammar of the Hill Mari dialect,
published in Latin in 1845 by M. A. Castrén. The author reveals the
shortcomings and merits of the book, emphasizing the special value of this
early grammar. In addition, the work reveals M. A. Castrén’s enormous
contribution to the study of the Uralic languages and the development of
Finno-Ugric comparative linguistics.
