The history of the symposium series on the language contacts of the Volga region is closely intertwined with the development of the Research Unit for Volgaic Languages operated by the Department of Finno-Ugric languages at the University of Turku. Therefore I shall discuss the development of the symposia and of the Research Unit simultaneously starting from 1993 until now.
