Abstract
Twenty-three species of Brachytheciaceae, ten of which were previously unknown from the area, are reported from Hunan Province of China: Palamocladium leskeoides (Hook.) Britt., Homalothecium laevisetum Sande Lac., Brachythecium buchananii (Hook.) A. Jaeger, B. garovaglioides Müll. Hal., B. populeum (Hedw.) B.S.G., B. plumosum (Hedw.) B.S.G., B. rutabulum (Hedw.) B.S.G., B. rivulare B.S.G., B. salebrosum (Web. & Mohr) B.S.G., Myuroclada maximowiczii (Borszcz.) Steere & Schof., Bryhnia novae-angliae (Sull. & Lesq.) Grout, Kindbergia praelonga (Hedw.) Ochyra, Oxyrrhynchium hians (Hedw.) Loeske, O. savatieri (Besch.) Broth., O. vagans (A. Jaeger) Ignatov & Huttunen, Platyhypnidium patulifolium (Card. & Thér.) Broth., P. riparioides (Hedw.) Dix., Rhynchostegium hunanense Ignatov & Huttunen, sp. nova , R. inclinatum (Mitt.) A. Jaeger, R. murale (Hedw.) B.S.G., R. pallidifolium (Mitt.) A. Jaeger, R. psilopodium Broth., Aerobryum speciosum Dozy & Molk., Okamuraea hakoniensis (Mitt.) Broth. and O. brachydictyon (Card.) Nog. Of the taxa occurring outside of Hunan are discussed and illustrated Oxyrrhynchium protractum (Müll. Hal.) Broth., Rhynchostegiella acicula Broth., R. leptoneura Dix. & Thér., R. sinensis Broth. & Par., and Eurhynchiadelphus eustegia (Besch.) Ignatov & Huttunen. Eleven new synonyms and eleven lectotypes or neotypes are proposed (indexed). Eurhynchiadelphus eustegia is new for Siberia, Rhynchostegium psilopodium Ignatov & Huttunen for Yunnan, and R. leptoneura for Vietnam. The altitudinal distributions of the species are mapped and they are grouped into distributional elements according to their frequency and ability to thrive in man-made habitats. The present network of Hunanese nature reserves suits well to protect the bryophyte diversity.
