Abstract

Innovation and renewal are at a heart of any organization. Many firms operate as part of networks. The networked business environment calls for more complete and complex solutions and also requires changes in value networks´configuration. The role of service integrator is to combine various pieces in the value network into an integrated solution for the customers. An important question is how the network renews its offering and innovates? Within entrepreneurial opportunity research a great focus has recently been placed on effectuation. The focus of this paper is to examine opportunity recognition activities in a network from the integrator perspective. The service network of this case study is integrated by a large focal company. The network consists of are small businesses (SMEs) that have adopted the service concept developed by the focal company. The paper is based on a real service concept network and it provides managers examples regarding managing networked business operations. We posit that changing stakeholder relationships through network engineering can help an integrator to discover new opportunities. A challenge to the integrator is to find balance between network orchestration and adequate degree of freedom.
