In the present chapter, I view Chinese climate policy statements as one aspect of Chinese foreign policy. These statements are taken as indicators of China’s alignment within global discourses on climate change. Of interest here are China’s foreign policy objectives in regard to climate policy in the short, intermediate, and long term. These objectives are viewed in light of the international community’s perceptions and assessments of China’s climate policy. While the emphasis is on the analysis of policy statements, of interest are also the practical strategies that are deployed to realize Chinese policy objectives. These are in turn examined in view of the objectives in order to highlight possible discrepancies between them. Finally, the success of the Chinese policy lines is examined in regard to recent developments in global climate policy.
