Tiivistelmä

Digitalization is the application of digital, computer assisted solutions into analogous--or only partially digital--information processes. While we should be extremely cautious about taking digitalization as granted--expecting it to provide an enhancement to all previous processes--the fact remains that digitalization opportunities should be exhaustively explored when ever information related processes and practices are modified.

Arguably, one of the most overlooked digitalization opportunities is process integration. Existing processes are easy digitalization targets, and, as well defined and already organizationally implemented entities, they should form the starting point of any digitalization efforts. A side effect of this process digitalization is quantification: to allow computer interaction, the information and the process are described in a structured manner. This description allows any of the parts to be referred in a predefined manner; enabling process integration. To provide a motivational example, let us assume that we already have digitilized solutions for doctoral students to request permission to attend academic events (e.g., summer school through a web form) and we have an electronic exam class in use. Now, a viable process integration consideration would be to automatically initialize an exam for the doctoral student from the information in the permission request, the student may take the "exam" when he/she has attended the event, and the already existing functionality in the electronic exam system takes this information to his/her study registry automatically. The challenge which remains is to be able to spot the process integration targets and to scout their implementation feasibility in a multifaceted organization environment.
