Abstract

The degree of autonomy was estimated for generative short shoots of silver birch by defoliating them after leaf flush. Defoliation reduced both final length (4%) and weight (18%) of female inflorescences. Short shoots are thus reproductively semi-autonomous modules of silver birch.
