The increases divorce and separation rates during the past decades have exposed more and more children to family dissolution. Several studies have found that children of divorce have compromised psychological and educational outcomes, but we have known little about whether the association between parental separation and these outcomes has changed over time. This deliverable includes two studies from Sweden on this topic. The first study examines changes in the living conditions and experiences of childhood family dissolution, and in its associations with psychological well-being and educational attainment in adulthood. The second study analyses cohort patterns in the intergenerational transmission of divorce and family dissolution. The results show that childhood family dissolutions are less likely to involve serious conflict, more likely to be followed by step-parenthood and residential moves, and more strongly associated with low social class. However, the relationships between parental separation and psychological well-being, educational attainment, or own family dissolution have remained stable over time.
