This study concerns the organization and presence
of accountability in hospital matrix organizations.
The topic is relatively unknown and has
not been studied in depth. However, it is essential
to gain knowledge of this issue in that accountability
must coincide with organization design
and function. This is a qualitative and empirical
case study, and the research material consists of
focus group interviews and diverse written material.
The study produces new information on
the presence of accountability in hospital matrix
organizations by using accountability levels to
recognize the central instances of accountability
in the context of matrix key roles. On the
basis of this study, we argue that accountability
can cause many organizational and managerial
challenges in the matrix structure. For example,
it is worth assessing how accountability can
be organized in terms of matrix key roles and
the effectiveness of patient care. By making accountability
visible it is possible to address these
challenges. The accountability perspective offers
a practical tool to confront the complexity
of hospital organizations. Accountability should
also be considered when designing a hospital organization.
Keywords: accountability, accountability levels,
