The paper discusses the way in which the factors influencing transformation toward or away from modularity, presented in General modular systems theory, appear in the context of social and health services, and the extent to which special characteristics of this context might support or prevent application of the modularity. Arguments were constructed based on literature concerning modularity in products and in services and the literature was reflected upon the special characteristics of health services presented by health economists. Combining these two perspectives revealed interesting opportunities that supported application of modularity but also contradictions appeared. This paper helps to understand how catalysts of modularity manifest in health service context what needs to be taken account if applying modularity in this context.
