A city is made from bricks, stone and wood, but it is also much more: experiences, emotions, dreams, daily practices, itineraries and images. This book studies the plurality of urban life by focusing on one decade in Rome - the 1870's - when the city was transformed into the national capital. By emphasizing the interrelatedness of time and space it makes visible the co-existence, tension and confrontation faced by the onset of national unity and living in diversity. The city is shown to be a place in which numerous worlds are simultaneously entangled.
