The Pegg-Barnett formalism gives an approximation sequence for the canonical 

(covariant) phase observable.  This formalism can be extended to other (covariant)

phase observables to get an approximation sequence for any such phase observable.

The canonical phase observable is the only phase observable which has a 

projection measure approximation sequence.
