This paper is an extended reflection on a Developmental Work Research project focused on the introduction of ICT into a developing country in Africa. Three Change Laboratories (CLs) were conducted in the course of this project. Each CL drew upon the experience of the one prior to it. By tracing the changes across implementations of the CLs, we were led to focus on the issue of dialogue between international project partners as central to the process of joint mediated activity. After presenting our basic theoretical orientation we present a narrative of the project as a whole, drawing upon video recorded records of project interactions. The data reveal the presence of contradictions between different visions of the ICTs and their role in schooling and the emergence of new objects of activity that show promise of superseding those contradictions. With this information as background, we discuss the theoretical challenges posed by our experiences.
