This article explores the platformization of cultural production and its impact on the boys’ love (BL) fandom in China. BL, a subculture centered around same-sex male romances and eroticism, has become increasingly integrated into mainstream commercial culture in China. This integration has been embedded in the platformization of the cultural industry, which is exemplified by leading platforms’ expansion into cultural production and circulation, such as Tencent’s pan-entertainment strategy. Through this strategy being endorsed by the Chinese authorities, Tencent has built a transmedia, multiplatform ecosystem centered around the BL genre. However, the regulation challenges due to the genre’s exploration of homosexuality and pornography, which are considered taboos in China. BL has thus become situated at the intersection of digital giants’ economic ambition and the authorities’ increasingly ideological control. This article discusses the position of BL in Tencent’s pan-entertainment ecosystem to highlight the results of platformization and the impact of the vague framework of platform governance. It posits that Tencent’s monopolization of access to various BL products engenders a strong dependency of BL fans on Tencent’s platformized ecosystem. This dependency makes it difficult for BL fans to migrate between online communities when facing the damage of platform governance, as they possibly lose fan creation, social networks, and, most importantly, direct engagement with the fan object. Consequently, the fanbase’s dependence enables platforms to enforce arbitrary governance on the BL, leveraging ambiguous legal status of BL. Such governance practices have ultimately eroded autonomy within BL communities.
