Amazonia consists of a complex mosaic of areas with different geological histories. Consequently, different kinds of soils are found in different areas, and both the nature and activity of present-day geological processes show wide variation. In recent years, botanical research in Amazonia has paid increasing attention to the effects of the geological and geomorphological conditions on the distribution of plant species and vegetation types. The present paper summarizes such results from Peruvian Amazonia.
