This article discusses the evolving heritage of the Finnish rock-musician, writer, and media persona Juhani Juice [pronounced: ˈjui̯se] Leskinen as it has been monumentalized and exhibited on the artist’s namesake square in his hometown of Juankoski (Kuopio) in Eastern Finland. Through an analysis of the square’s changing features realized by various actors and interest groups in 1986–2019, the paper reconstructs the development of the site from a local place-promotion enterprise in which the figure of Juice Leskinen was discovered as part of an emerging Juankoskian cultural heritage to a regionally politicized heritage conflict fueled by the municipality’s merger with the city of Kuopio in 2017. Taking Juice’s Square as a reference point, the article argues for an understanding of popular music heritage that accounts for both its cultural pervasiveness and the persistent vulnerability of its traces. In doing so, it contributes to recent discussions that define popular music heritage as multiply precarious.
