Tiivistelmä
Using atomic force microscopy the freshly cleaved muscovite interfaces in dry air and in water have been studied with atomic resolution. Three different surface layers can be observed for this single crystal. This phenomenon has been ascribed to the weak interactions between the atomic planes. Also, the galena surface has been imaged in dry air and in a disodium tetraborate liquid. In this case the differences have not been so striking. The role of rumpling of surface atoms has been considered. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
