Abstract

n Finland, controversial discussion about the role and suitability of rock and pop music was once again raised when the monster band Lordi won the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest in Athens. The historical event—Finland had never before won the Contest—raised joy in whole Europe. Not just hard rock was seen to win, but all the different genres of music were now expected to join the competition. In the field of Finnish music education, rock and pop music have not been a new thing for a while. In fact they constitute one of the essential parts of its daily practises. The informal music-learning practises that are used in rock and pop music contribute to the ideas of musical ownership, authenticity and meaningful learning experiences in many ways. As the aspiration to ‘do your own thing’ is an essential feature of contemporary society, it is also important that those ‘things’ are to be listened, discussed and evaluated. In this manner music education can promote the idea of democracy and the choice of freedom. As rock and pop music are taught in schools, they open doors for the teaching of more traditional music as well. The role of pop-band playing is also significant in terms of school culture, when the results of practising are shared in school concerts and other occasions. In music education the emphasis should be on crossing over different genres while developing student’s personal relationship to music in general.
