The effect of the grain size of a polycrystalline sample on the rotational tunnelling of ammonium ions is studied in (NH4)2ZnCl4 by NMR level crossing. When a single crystal is ground to a powder of 1-2 mum grains, the width of the distribution of the tunnel splitting is observed to increase tenfold and the peak position shifts somewhat.
