Innovating in collaboration between heterogeneous market and non-market actors can be a cumbersome journey, along which diverse innovation barriers are faced. Therefore, our focus is to analyse what innovation barriers come relevant when heterogeneous firms and other stakeholders aim to innovate and how barriers transform and change along the innovation process. This paper presents an extensive longitudinal case study and analyzes organization, network and market related innovation barriers in an extensive multi-sector innovation network comprising diverse collaborators aiming to develop and commercialize a hygiene-concept. In the case over ten firms together aim to combine different technologies related to all indoor elements – air, water, surfaces – to create a comprehensive solution to increase the level of indoor hygiene during the whole life-cycle of the building. We analyze diverse innovation barriers in the case and link them to innovation activities along the innovation process, and thereby contribute to innovation management literature.
