Environmental magnetism is a research method that has spread all over the world since the 1970s and 1980s, finding applications in pollution monitoring, source tracing, and mineralogy identification. However, it has not gained much attention in Finland. In this article, we present the results of two enviromagnetic air quality studies done in Turku and Harjavalta, SW Finland in 2010 and 2011. The sampling of air pollutants was carried out with standardized moss bags. Magnetic susceptibility, hysteresis loops, and isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) were used as the main magnetic methods. Magnetic and chemical results show that areas near pollution sources (traffic, Industrial Park) receive the heaviest air pollution load. Moreover, magnetic susceptibility correlated well with investigated element concentrations. Magnetite was identified as the predominant magnetic mineral phase in moss bags. SEM-photography revealed that angular particles dominate the street dust samples of Turku as well as moss bag samples of Harjavalta.
