SummaryDecarbonisation of the energy sector requires on the one hand adoption of carbon-free fuels such as hydrogen (H2), instead of fossil fuels, and on the other hand more efficient energy conversion technologies (e.g. fuel cells, gas turbines and internal combustion engines). Engines operated on the argon power cycle (APC) promise a significantly improved energy conversion efficiency, while reducing most or all emissions, but still require extensive research efforts to gain a profound understanding of the fluid flow and chemical reactions in such engines. Here, we use high-performance computing (HPC) and advanced experimental techniques to study the fluid flow and combustion in APC engines. The research also utilises data-driven and machine learning methods to create faster models for combustion simulations. The results will yield new insight and an improved understanding of APC engines operated with hydrogen and methane. The developed codes will be published as open source.
