Tiivistelmä: The project, conducted at the University of Turku, studies the relationship between the institutional factors (reimbursements, benefits), policies (austerity), structural factors (demographic, socioeconomic factors) and economic burden of medicines on households in Finland and in Europe. Unlike previous studies, the project also aims to address the complimentary effects of different types of social provision (services and cash transfers). The project used available national and international survey data and system-level indicators, with hierarchical and multivariate statistical methods, to conduct comparative analyses of European countries and analyses over time in the Finnish settings. Finland, together with many other European countries, has increased patient charges for medicines in recent years, as austerity measures. Since costs are the most commonly reported access hurdle to medical care, these changes have trade-offs in terms of equal access.
