Human Element in Information Security; Human-Computer Interaction; Security Behavior; Technology Adoption; Darkside of Technology Use; Learning and Engagement
I am a visiting researcher at the Department of Computing, University of Turku (UTU), Finland. I hold a lecturership (Assistant Professor) position in Human Centred Security at Department of Computer and Information Sciences, University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom. I am also senior research consultant at Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), Doha, Qatar.
I received a doctorate degree [DSc(Tech.)] from the UTU in 2019. Before that, in 2013, I completed two master degrees: a master degree in technology [MSc(Tech.) with Networked Systems Security as a major] from UTU, and a Commonwealth Executive MBA from Allama Iqbal Open University, Pakistan. I have another master degree in computer science (MCS) from International Islamic University, Pakistan.
I have served previously in some of the best organizations in Pakistan, such as the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, National Highways and Motorways Police, and the Higher Education Commission. During that time, I received several commendation certificates during his professional career, including one from the Prime Minister of Pakistan. I also received management-related training from the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (LFHE). I was also selected for the US State Department's prestigious International Visitors Leadership Program in 2010.
My research focus is "where human meets technology". My multi-disciplinary research uses knowledge from disciplines such as sociology, psychology, and economics to understand human-technology interaction with a special focus on security and privacy. Apart from technology pre-adoption, continued-adoption, and post-adoption scenarios, I also have interests in phenomena related to the dark side of technology, such as techno-stress, cyberchondria, internet addiction, information overload, and similar. Improving the learning and engagement of the future and existing workforce in the context of cybersecurity is another area of his interest.
So far, I have published 35 research articles, including journal papers, conference proceedings, book chapters, and technical reports.
My recent research has appeared in impact factor journals, such as Telematics & Informatics (IF 8.5), Technology in Society (IF 9.2), Information Technology & People (IF 4.8), Journal of Medical Internet Research (IF 7.4), Information Processing & Management (IF 8.6), Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services (IF 10.4), JMIR Medical Informatics (IF 3.3), Applied Clinical Informatics (IF 2.2), and Online Information Review (IF 3.3). I have also published in security conferences (IEEE TrustCom, IFIP SEC), HCI conferences (British HCI, ANT), and education conferences (IEEE EDUCON, IEEE FIE, IEEE ICALT), among others.

I have been a co-teacher for "Human Element in Information Security", a master-level course with Professor Jouni Isoaho, from 2014 to 2022. Between 2019 and 2022, I also taught international students a bachelor-level course, "Digitalization and Cybersecurity," as part of an education export project. I was also the teacher responsible for AI & Cybersecurity MOOC (https://sites.utu.fi/cyberai/en/) between 2020-2022.
