Professor of cardiology, PI in CAREFIB and LAA-CLOSURE
Tuomas Kiviniemi, MD, PhD, FESC, is Professor of Cardiology at the University of Turku and Chief Physician at the Heart Center, Turku University Hospital. His clinical and academic work focuses on interventional cardiology, atrial fibrillation, and cardiovascular risk in patients undergoing cardiac procedures. He also serves as President of the Finnish Cardiac Society for the 2024–2026 term, contributing nationally to cardiovascular care development and professional education.
Professor Kiviniemi completed his medical and doctoral degrees at the University of Turku and later broadened his research expertise during a research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. His research integrates clinical trials, biomarker studies, translational science, and outcome research in percutaneous and surgical cardiac interventions. He leads the multidisciplinary CAREFIB Consortium, which encompasses several major investigator-initiated studies, including CAREBANK, CAREiCON and the LAA-CLOSURE randomized trial program investigating stroke prevention strategies in atrial fibrillation.
His scientific output includes peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, trial leadership roles, and long-term collaborations with computational medicine, imaging, and device-innovation groups.
In addition to his academic duties, Professor Kiviniemi is a frequently invited expert in the European Society of Cardiology community, contributing as an abstract reviewer, session chair, and presenter in acute coronary syndromes and interventional cardiology themes.
At the national level, he has served as a long-standing member and chair within the Finnish Cardiac Society, holding multiple leadership and editorial roles. As President of the Society 2024-2026, he advanced cardiovascular education, guidelines, and professional collaboration across Finland.
Professor Kiviniemi’s current research interests span atrial fibrillation detection technologies, outcomes after cardiac surgery, advanced imaging, and digital health solutions. His work continues to bridge clinical cardiology with engineering, data science, and translational discovery, supporting the University of Turku’s strategic strengths in cardiovascular medicine.
At the University of Turku, Professor Kiviniemi is actively involved in supervising doctoral trainees in cardiology, and he has mentored more than ten completed PhD theses. His teaching activities also include specialist training and contributions to national cardiology textbooks.
