Mikael Mattlin is Research Professor (2022--) at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, as well as Adjunct Professor and Senior Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Turku (on leave of absence). Previously he has held the positions of Acting Director and Deputy Director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (2024), Professor of Political Science at the University of Turku (2021–22), Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Helsinki (2018–19), TIAS Collegium Researcher (2018–20) and Senior Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Turku (2014–17), Research Fellow in the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (2011–13), and University Lecturer of World Politics at the University of Helsinki (2008–10).
He has been a visiting scholar at Fudan University, BOFIT (the Finnish central bank), the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Academia Sinica, National University of Singapore, Tübingen University and West-Bohemian University. He is also an Associate Research Fellow of he European Research Centre on Contemporary Taiwan.
Dr Mattlin led the Academy of Finland-funded FORAC-research project (https://sites.utu.fi/forac) at the University of Turku 2020–23.
