Archipelago Sea research
Associate professor (2nd phase), Archipelago Research Institute / Biodiversity Unit, University of Turku
My role as an associate professor (2ⁿᵈ phase) at the research station of the Archipelago Research Institute gives me a chance to participate in many ongoing projects at the University of Turku. Close to my heart are 1. Global climate impacts on Baltic freshwater runoff and it's abiotic/biotic regulation of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea ecosystems by using time series analysis. 2. The effect of Baltic seawater salinity decrease on the growth, maturity, and feeding trade-off of the Baltic herring. 3. Sedimentology together with nano-/microplastics in the Archipelago Sea. 4. Ticks and tick-borne pathogens in Finland.
Fields of research and special fields of expertise:
• Marine Biology & Aquatic Ecology, Biological Oceanography
• Ecology of the Baltic Sea environment, especially the Archipelago Sea
• Long-term climatic changes, especially climatic seawater salinity decrease and eutrophication processes in the Baltic Sea and their effects on marine/aquatic biodiversity
• Predictive statistical time series modelling (e.g. ARIMA, Transfer Functions), Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLIMMIX) and Statistical Downscaling using environmental monitoring data series.
