Economic Geography, Maritime Transport, Urban and Regional Studies
Tommi Inkinen is a Professor of Economic Geography at the University of Turku (UTU), Finland. He is also the Vice Dean of education in the Faculty of Science of UTU 2025–2029. Previously he was a Professor of Economic Geography (2012–2016) and an acting Professor of Human Geography (2008–2012) at the University of Helsinki (UH). In 2014 he was the Vice Head of the Department of Geosciences and Geography at the UH. After Helsinki, he worked as a Research Director and the Vice Director at the Brahea Centre of UTU (2016–2020). Prof. Inkinen holds a title of Docent (Adjunct Professor) of Regional Studies in UH. His research interests primarily cover issues of innovation geography, urban technology, maritime studies, and industrial systems. These include the regional and social structuring of innovation systems, technology integration, regional development and logistics of transport. His books include Geographies of Disruption (with Tan Yigitcanlar) by Springer (2019); and Smart Cities and Innovative Urban Technologies by Routledge (2021) and Sustainable Mobility and Transport (2022) by MDPI (both edited with Tan Yigitcanlar and Mark Wilson). Inkinen was a chairperson of the International Geographical Union’s (IGU) Innovation, Information and Technology Commission 2016–2024. In 2022–2024, he was a member of the Research Council for Culture and Society of the Research Council of Finland (formerly Academy of Finland). Inkinen is currently an associate editor of the journal Sustainable Cities and Society (by Elsevier) and earlier he was the Editor-In-Chief (2010-2013) of a peer-reviewed quarterly national journal Terra, Finnish Geographical Journal. He is also an editorial board member in several international journals dedicated to geographies of economy, innovation, and technology.
