Research

My PhD thesis will focus on the relationship between St. Michael’s Parish as a part of the Finnish Evangelical-Lutheran Church and diverse and scattered religious sphere in today’s Finnish society.

The emergence of diverse possibilities of religious affiliation challenges the traditional religiosity and religious practices. The question about post-secular spirituality, where individualistic tendencies in religious or spiritual life, personal experiences and detachment from the institutionalized religions are emphasized, will be scrutinized in relation to the Finnish Evangelical-Lutheran religiosity as it is in current Finnish society.

This angle attaches the counterpart – the Church – to the discussion about post-secularism as an active agent, not merely as a background or canvas, to which the concepts of spirituality or new spirituality are compared.
