Biografia

Michael has a varied background encompassing medical anthropology, public health, ICT and injury epidemiology. He is mainly concerned with the development of community-based solutions for injury and violence prevention among at-risk populations. The bulk of this work lies in the production and dissemination of epidemiological research on injuries and the contexts in which they occur. He is particularly motivated to investigate the mechanisms by which family factors, resource and material deprivation influence injury events and their outcomes.

Description of research
The Research Group on Injury Epidemiology and Prevention (IEP), is an international multi-disciplinary research team committed to understanding injuries as core public health challenges and developing mitigation strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on research which informs population-based interventions, the use of technological innovations for injury control and multi-sectoral advocacy.

Areas of focus
1) Injury Epidemiology: Injuries, whether unintentional or intentional, are among the most important threats to population health worldwide. Unfortunately, the morbidity, mortality and wider socioeconomic consequences linked to injuries, are not matched with adequate levels of investigation into risk and contextual factors. This is especially true across the global south. Highlighted concerns of IEP include pediatric TBI, injury during adolescence and gender-based violence.

2) Injury and Mental Health: Increasing global wealth gaps have exacerbated various risk behaviors in communities where protective factors have been disrupted. Many forms of trauma have psychosocial and behavioral precursors in addition to lingering sequelae which all receive inadequate attention. Of particular interest within IEP are investigations into suicidology, non-suicidal self-harm, the influence of mental health on caregiving practices and substance abuse. The focus lies in disentangling the social, economic, cultural and societal development-related factors which precipitate the aforementioned, and other phenomena as they relate to injury and mental health.

3) ICTs and Injury: Information and communication technologies (ICT) are underutilized in injury research and prevention. Whether they be geographic information systems used in spatial analyses of injury events in well-defined populations, telemedicine-based burn care or teleconsultation for injury management; ICTs have the potential to reduce costs and reach previously hard-to-reach populations. IEP’s is on implementing and evaluating technologies which have potential applications for injury control and prevention in population-based and clinical settings.
