Biography

Balcom Raleigh is a interdisciplinary scholar seeking to push the limits of knowledge production, develop the field of futures studies, and impact humanity’s global future. He completed his master’s degree in futures studies at Turku School of Economics - University of Turku in May 2017. During his studies, he worked as the Millennium Project intern for Finland Futures Research Centre (FFRC) from June-December 2015 and continued working for the FFRC until he completed his degree and became a project researcher. For his master’s thesis, he created a role-based futuring game called Metaphor Molecule inspired by the June 2015 CLA Game experimentation designed by Sohail Inayatullah, the UNESCO Chair for Futures Studies, and Sirkka Heinonen.
He previously worked in the field of online communications (2000-2014) creating and running all forms of digital communication campaigns, from e-newsletters and websites to elearning and social media. A significant part of his online communications work was for Macalester College (St. Paul, Minnesota) where he developed a variety of innovative online communications approaches and campaigns for the college’s alumni and key funders.

Research

Balcom Raleigh is currently part of the futures team of the Bioeconomy and Justice (BioEcoJust) project funded by Academy of Finland (January 2018 to present), and the Future Potentials of Big Data for European Growth Corridor Development funded by ESPON (May 2018 to present). His special tasks for BioEcoJust include investigating surprising futures of the BioEconomy through year 2125 and developing the project’s Delphi study. Previously, he was part of the Futures of Cities and Communities team at FFRC researching futures of mobility in Turku 2050 from a complex systems perspective (May 2016 to December 2017), a project to benchmark the international Master's Program in Futures Studies to other masters programs around the world (January to  March 2016), and the Millennium Project's Future of Work/Technology 2050 study (June to December 2015) and the NeoCarbon Energy Project funded as a Tekes strategic opening (June to August 2015, with various supporting roles afterward).

Teaching

Balcom Raleigh co-designed and was part of the teaching team for the Finland Futures Academy Summer School 2017 which was organized as a UNESCO MOST Futures Literacy Lab. He is part of the teaching team for the Scenario Thinking (FUTU2) at Turku School of Economics in September-October 2018. His motto: “Learn to be more human: The AI and robots will soon be better than you at everything else.”
