Biography

PhD (2018): Conservation of Traditional Rural Biotopes in Finland: A Social-Ecological Approach. University of Jyväskylä, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Department of Biological and Environmental Science, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
MSc (2008): University of Jyväskylä, Faculty of
Mathematics and Science, Department of Biological and Environmental
Science, Ecology and Environmental management.

I have also completed pedagogical studies in teaching biology and geography, and studied educational leadership.

In addition, I have worked in Finnish environmental administration (2015 and 2014: conservation biologist in Metsähallitus Parks & Wildlife Finland; and 2009-2012: project manager in ELY Centre for Central Finland, to name the most recent jobs).

Research

I am a conservation biologist with an appeal to landscape ecology. My expertise lies in biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes. I have explored potential solutions for conservation issues within traditional rural landscapes. More specifically, I have studied diverse, species-rich habitats created by old-fashioned agriculture such as meadows and wood-pastures, from a social-ecological systems perspective. This work has inspired me to look more deeply into human-nature relationship and sustainable use of rural landscapes, which are the focus of my current research. I utilize ecological, geographical, and social science methods interdisciplinarily. I also have a calling for science outreach.

Teaching

In University of Jyväskylä, I have planned and taught a course on spatial
land-use planning with a focus on conservation prioritization (2016, 2017). The
course utilizes Zonation software.

I have also worked as a biology and geography teacher at high school level (2012, 2013), and as a university teacher in didactics of biology and geography in University of Jyväskylä, Faculty of Education (2009, 2010).
