Biografia

PhD (Tech) Tomi Westerlund joined the Department of Future Technologies, University of Turku as a Senior Researcher in 2008, in 2015 became a University Research Fellow and in June 2017 Adjunct Professor (docent) in Embedded Electronics Education and Applications at University of Turku. In September 2018, Westerlund was appointed as a Research Professor at Wuxi Institute of Fudan University. Since 2013, he has acted yearly as a visiting scholar at Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Dr. Westerlund is part of Finnish Centre of Excellence in Research of Sustainable Space (Academy of Finland). He is the responsible researcher of the nanosatellite technology research group at the department. In addition to the nanosatellite technology, his current research interest is Internet of Things (IoT) in smart agriculture, smart cities as well as unmanned vehicles (aerial, ground and surface) and robots. In all these application areas, the core research interests are in energy efficiency, dependability, interoperability and autonomous operation. An essential part of the above research interests is also the development of flexible, lightweight and smart IoT architecture that provides us means to embed intelligence into small, resource constrained devices at the edge of the network (fog and edge computing).
