Project Description:

In this project, our specific aim is to characterize molecular mechanisms regulating deposition and turnover of extracellular matrix. We examine the role and regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), as well as their specific inhibitors, TIMPs, in tumor growth and invasion, tissue repair, and fibrosis. We are specifically interested in elucidating the signaling mechanisms regulating the expression of MMPs in the invasion and migration of normal and malignant cells. We want to evaluate specific MMPs as diagnostic markers for metastases of malignant tumors and as prognostic indicators for metastasis capacity of highly invasive primary tumors. Understanding the mechanisms regulating proteolytic capacity of normal and malignant cells is important in development of specific therapeutic modalities for preventing tumor growth and metastasis, and may also be utilized in developing treatment for defective tissue repair, as well as for disorders involving excessive degradation of connective tissue, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Dr .Kahari is a senior scientist at the Centre for Biotechnology of the University of Turku. His group currently consists of 8 graduate students and 2 technicians.
