Molecular Epidemiology and Evolution Research Programme
1997-1999

The research programme in molecular epidemiology and evolution broadens themes 4 and 5 of the Academy's Genome Research Programme. These are population genetics (theme 4), concerned particularly the evolution of genes, the adaptation of organisms to extreme conditions, genetic epidemiology and the Finnish genetic heritage, and environmental molecular genetics, including genetic factors predisposing to disease. Support is directed primarily at consortia engaged in top research by international standards seeking to test innovative hypotheses.

• the molecular genetics of chronic common diseases
• the combined impact of environmental factors and gene mutations predisposing to disease
• the mechanisms of molecular evolution
• DNA-level mutation in the population
• the genetic background to the effective properties of organisms
• mathematical modelling and the development of calculation models
