Molecular Epidemiology and Evolution Research Programme
1997-1999

Objectives of the research programme

The objective of the Genome Research Programme initiated by the Academy of Finland in 1994 has been to promote and direct Finland's genome research towards the fields important in the future, such as the regulation of genes, the interaction between a gene and gene product, gene transfers and knock-outs, and gene therapy. The programme aims at integrating the input and expertise of the highly-advanced research teams in various fields. This creates sufficiently large top research networks and teams and improves Finland's national and competitive know-how in the rapidly advancing research fields covered by the programme.

The Finns have a genetic inheritance of a structure unique the world over, and our scientists should be ensured the potential for its efficient investigation. This also paves the way for the use of molecular genetic knowledge in the investigation and treatment of the common diseases via genetic epidemiology. The strong Finnish biological research tradition combined with the latest methods offer good potential for research in molecular evolution. The research programme in molecular epidemiology and evolution broadens themes 4 and 5 of the Academy's Genome Research Programme. These are population genetics (theme 4), concerned particularly the the evolution of genes, the adaptation of organisms to extreme conditions, genetic epidemiology and the Finnish genetic heritage, and environmental molecular genetics, including genetic factors predisposing to disease.
