The Academy of Finland establishes research programmes in rapidly developing, scientifically important areas of research and in nationally important problem areas requiring scientific knowledge. Research programmes consist of a number of related research projects pertaining to the same target area of research. A research programme is funded for a fixed period. The goal of the research programmes is to bring together the research capacity and expertise of high-level research groups working in various fields.

The primary areas of the Genome Research Programme include gene regulation, interactions between several genes and gene products, gene transfers, and knock-outs as well as gene therapy.

The primary areas of Research Programme in Molecular Epidemiology and Evolution are population genetics, concerned particularly with the evolution of genes, the adaptation of organisms to extreme conditions, genetic epidemiology and the Finnish genetic heritage, and environmental molecular genetics, including genetic factors predisposing to disease.

The primary areas of the Cell Biology Research Programme include the mechanisms of cell division and differentiation, biogenesis of cell organelles and intracellular traficking as well as signal transduction.
